Photo tips for NYC helicopter flights

Settings that work through glass and without, which lens to bring, and how to actually get the shot you have in your head.

The single biggest reason people are disappointed by their helicopter tour photos is that they shoot like they're on the ground. A skyline shot taken handheld on a sidewalk at 1/60 sec works fine — the camera is still. Inside a moving helicopter at 1,500 feet, 1/60 sec produces motion-blurred slop.

The fix isn't expensive gear. It's three settings and one technical habit. Below, the camera settings that actually work, lens recommendations for the cabin, and a few seat-side notes that turn average phone snaps into shots worth printing.

The three settings that matter

Shutter speed

1/1000 sec or faster

The single most important setting. The helicopter vibrates, banks and translates — anything slower than 1/500 sec blurs. 1/1000 is the safe target; 1/1600 is better if you have the light. On a phone, this means you'll need to fool the meter into thinking it's brighter than it is.

ISO

Auto, capped at 1600

Let the camera raise ISO to keep the shutter at 1/1000. Modern sensors handle ISO 1600 cleanly, ISO 3200 with mild noise. Cap higher than that and you sacrifice quality for no real gain — at that point, light is gone and you should accept it.

Lens

24–70 mm equiv.

Wide enough to fit the skyline at close range, long enough to isolate landmarks. A 24–70 mm zoom is the right answer for almost everyone. Avoid bulky 70–200 mm zooms — too narrow inside the cabin and prone to bumping the door frame. Phone wide angles handle the cabin well; phone telephotos are typically too soft.

Glass vs. doors-off — the workflow difference

Shooting through helicopter windows is harder than it looks. The plexiglass has small scratches and dust the eye doesn't register but the lens picks up. Direct sunlight on the glass produces ghosting. The fix: press the lens hood gently against the window (don't let it touch — vibration transfer kills sharpness). Switch off any UV or polarizing filter — they make reflections worse here, not better.

Doors-off solves all of this — no glass means no reflections, no scratches, no dust between you and the city. But you're also in wind that's strong enough to rip a phone from a loose grip. Every camera item must be tethered. The trade-off is worth it for serious photography; for casual phone shots, doors-on with the above glass-shooting workflow is plenty.

Seat side and what you'll see

On most Manhattan tours the helicopter flies a counterclockwise circuit: south along the Hudson, east at the Statue of Liberty, north along the East River, west to land. That means the left side gets the Hudson, the Statue, the New Jersey skyline; the right side gets the East River, Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan skyline. Most photographers prefer the right side for the iconic skyline shots, but the Statue close-pass is on the left.

Doors-off photography overrides this — you're in a fixed position with a wide angle of view, both sides give you usable angles. For doors-on, ask the gate agent which side gets which view that day. Routes vary by wind and air traffic, and the agent will know.

Phone vs. camera — pick one and commit

If you brought a real camera, leave the phone in your pocket. Switching between them on a 15-minute flight is the single biggest reason people miss the iconic shot. Modern phone cameras handle wide-angle and decent light well — they'll match a $1,000 camera at 24 mm in good conditions. For golden hour or night, the dedicated camera wins.

If you only have a phone: turn off HDR (it slows the shutter when the helicopter is moving), set the brightest tap-to-focus on a bright cloud or sky area (which raises shutter speed), and shoot video for the cinematic effect at the same time as photos. A 4K 60fps clip extracted later as stills is often sharper than a panicked tap-tap-tap photo burst.

Frequently asked questions

Is my phone good enough, or do I need a real camera?

A phone from the last 3 years handles a daytime helicopter tour well — wide-angle, 24mm equivalent, fast enough shutter in good light. The dedicated-camera advantage shows up in three situations: golden hour (better dynamic range), night flights (low-light noise), and any time you want to print larger than A3. For social media and album-sized prints, a phone is fine.

I have a mirrorless camera — which single lens should I bring?

A 24–70 mm full-frame equivalent zoom (16–55 on APS-C). Wide end gets the whole skyline at close passes, long end isolates the Statue or specific buildings. Skip the 70–200 mm — too narrow inside a cabin and prone to bumping the seat in front of you during banks. Bring one lens, not two; lens changes in flight are not feasible.

How do I avoid window reflections in doors-on flights?

Hold the lens hood gently against the window (not pressed — vibration kills sharpness, just blocking ambient light). Wear dark clothes (light shirts reflect into the glass). Turn off any polarizing filter — it makes things worse on plexiglass. Shoot away from the sun direction. The window itself is usually cleaner than expected — operators wipe between flights.

Can I use my own camera strap, or is that not allowed?

For doors-on flights, your own neck or wrist strap is fine and recommended. For doors-off, operators require their own single-point tether — your strap stays in the prep room. The tether attaches at the harness D-ring and prevents the camera from falling regardless of how you hold it. It feels strange but adds zero limitation to shooting once you get used to it.
