Three operators run dedicated proposal flights with different departure points and budgets. HeliNY launches from Downtown Manhattan or Linden NJ (25 to 30 minutes, $3,450 to $3,795). Wings Air departs from Westchester County Airport in an Airbus AS350 (30 to 45 minutes, $3,266). A Champagne-Charter package from Downtown Manhattan adds champagne and onboard photography ($3,780 to $4,052 for up to five passengers). For a truly extravagant option, a four-hour Glenmere Mansion engagement experience exists at $12,100 — helicopter to a historic Hudson Valley estate for the actual proposal. Every operator coordinates the ring (kept on the pilot or in a secure box until your signal), can arrange a photographer, and recommends 7 to 14 days lead time so the slot, weather and routing all align.

7 to 14 days for most operators, longer for peak weekends (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day weekend, late October sunset window). Each operator runs only a handful of charter slots per day, and proposal flights are time-sensitive — golden hour over Lower Manhattan lasts about 25 minutes, and bad weather can push your slot by a day. Most operators ask for a tentative date plus a backup date at booking. If you are booking the Champagne-Charter package or the Glenmere Mansion experience, plan 14 to 21 days ahead — the photographer and venue coordination adds another layer.
Either on the pilot's wrist in a secure pouch or in a small lockable box mounted to the cabin floor — your choice, decided at the pre-flight briefing. Both options keep the ring out of sight from your partner during the routing portion of the flight. At your signal (usually a hand gesture or a specific cue you arrange beforehand), the pilot passes it back or hands it to you. Operators specifically advise against keeping the ring in your own pocket during the flight — the wind from open vents and the movement during turns make it easier to drop than you think. Every operator that runs proposal flights regularly has lost zero rings; the system works.
Only in the Champagne-Charter package from Downtown Manhattan (the $3,780 to $4,052 tier) — that one includes an onboard photographer who captures both the routing shots and the proposal moment itself. For HeliNY and Wings Air, the photographer is an optional add-on (typically $400 to $700, arranged through the operator at booking). If your budget allows it, the cabin photographer is worth more than the upgrade itself — the moment is over in seconds and your partner's face is the entire story, hard to capture yourself while you are kneeling. If you skip the photographer, ask the pilot to do a hover at the closest legal point so you can take a phone photo together right after the moment.
Most operators have a 275 lb / 125 kg per-person limit. HeliNY is stricter at 250 lb / 113 kg on its Bell 407 fleet. Above the limit, you need a "comfort seat" or extra seat (surcharges vary: HeliNY $99 / $149 / $249, other operators typically $99–$150). HeliNY weighs all passengers at check-in and assigns seats by weight for flight balance.
