Kearny — where doors-off photo flights actually depart

FlyNYON and Fly Hummingbyrd both run their photo flights from the Kearny industrial waterfront in New Jersey. 30 to 50 minutes from Manhattan by car, shuttle included, free parking — and the only place in the NYC area where doors-off helicopters operate.

Why doors-off flights only happen here

New York City regulations do not permit doors-off helicopter operations from its in-city heliports. The Kearny terminal area in New Jersey — sitting on industrial land on the Passaic River across from Jersey City — is the closest legally workable departure point. FlyNYON established the location for its doors-off photo flight in the early 2010s; Fly Hummingbyrd followed with a doors-on alternative from the same Kearny base, sharing the same approach to Manhattan but without the harness setup. The location is utilitarian, not glamorous: a converted industrial pad with a shuttle van that drives you the final few minutes from the operator terminal to the takeoff zone. Plan generously: traffic from Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel can stretch from 30 to 50 minutes depending on the time of day.

How to get there

By car

30–50 minutes from Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel and Tonnele Avenue. The FlyNYON terminal address is 78 John Miller Way — set GPS to that exactly, the area is industrial and unsigned. Hummingbyrd uses the same approach. Allow extra time for late-afternoon return traffic to NYC after evening flights.

Public transit

No practical public transit. The closest PATH/light-rail stop is Harrison or Newark Penn Station, still 15–20 minutes by taxi from the operator terminal. Uber from Manhattan typically runs $45–75 one-way; for the doors-off camera gear you usually want a car anyway, so most guests Uber both directions.

Parking

Free on-site parking included with every booking — both FlyNYON and Hummingbyrd have marked guest lots at the terminal. From the lot, the operator runs a shuttle van to the takeoff pad (a few minutes' drive). No street parking issues, no fees.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kearny run flights on Sundays?

Yes — both FlyNYON and Fly Hummingbyrd operate seven days a week, including Sundays and most holidays. Sunday morning is one of the most-booked slots for doors-off photo flights (better light, lower Manhattan helicopter traffic) — book a week ahead in summer.

How does the Kearny terminal shuttle work?

After check-in at the operator terminal (FlyNYON or Hummingbyrd), a shuttle van drives the small group from the parking lot to the takeoff pad — a few minutes' drive across the industrial site. The shuttle runs on the operator's flight schedule, not on demand; if you miss your check-in window, you may miss the shuttle for your slot. Include the shuttle time in your "arrive 45 minutes early" buffer.

Why is there no clear heliport fee number for Kearny?

Both Kearny operators bundle landing, handling and facility costs into the booking price rather than itemising them at check-in like JRB. FlyNYON additionally adds a "+ Fees" line at checkout that typically lands $20–35 above the base price — read the final total carefully before paying. Fly Hummingbyrd publishes a single all-in price. No separate facility-fee receipt at the gate either way.

FlyNYON or Hummingbyrd — which one should I book at Kearny?

They are different products, not different prices for the same product. Book FlyNYON for the true doors-off experience — strapped in with a single-point quick-release harness, the cabin doors removed, the only legal way to take open-air NYC photos. Book Fly Hummingbyrd for a doors-on flight from the same Kearny base — cheaper, no harness, and a popular pick if you find FlyNYON's setup intimidating but still want the Kearny pre-flight VIP-lounge atmosphere. They share the location, not the cabin.
