Peak color in the Hudson Valley typically runs from October 15 to early November, varying by elevation: the higher Catskills (3,000+ feet) turn first, around October 10 to 20; the river valleys (Bear Mountain, Tappan Zee, lower hills) peak between October 20 and November 5; the city-side foliage in Westchester County and northern New Jersey turns latest, sometimes lasting into mid-November. If you want a single safe date, book the third weekend of October — that's the window with the highest probability of catching at least one of the elevation bands at peak. After November 10, much of the deciduous foliage is past peak.
Helicopter sightseeing only operates under VFR (visual flight rules), which means good visibility and ceilings above 1,000 feet AGL. Low overcast, heavy rain, fog and gusty winds will ground the flight. Both Wings Air and HeliNY rebook you to the next available slot at no charge if the operator cancels for weather. Two practical options. By Metro-North from Grand Central Terminal to White Plains takes about 35 minutes (Harlem Line, runs every 30 minutes), then a 10-minute taxi to the airport — total around 50 USD per couple. By car, the trip from Manhattan takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, and parking at the airport is free. The airport itself is small — check-in is fast, no TSA security for general-aviation flights.
The Robinson R44 Raven II is a piston-engine four-seater that Wings Air flies with two passenger seats next to the pilot — tighter cabin, more intimate feeling, lower charter price. Pick the R44 if you are travelling solo or as a couple and want the closer pilot interaction and the "small plane" feeling. The Airbus AS350 (also called H125) is a larger turbine-engine helicopter with up to six passenger seats in two rows — more cabin space, smoother in turbulence, higher charter price. Pick the AS350 for groups of 3 to 6, or if you specifically want the larger cabin and quieter ride. Both charters fly the same route in the 30- and 45-minute versions; the choice is about cabin size and group.
Most operators have a 275 lb / 125 kg per-person limit. HeliNY is stricter at 250 lb / 113 kg on its Bell 407 fleet. Above the limit, you need a "comfort seat" or extra seat (surcharges vary: HeliNY $99 / $149 / $249, other operators typically $99–$150). HeliNY weighs all passengers at check-in and assigns seats by weight for flight balance.
